The tarot is a learning tool, far more than just a tool for doing readings.  Many people get stuck when they are beginning to learn to read the tarot, thinking that they don’t know enough.  Maybe they haven’t memorized all the meanings of all the cards, or perhaps they haven’t mastered the particular spread they’ve chosen to read with. They think they have to know everything there is to know about the tarot, before they can read for someone other than themselves.

     After 40 years of reading the tarot, I am still learning more about it every day, every time I use it.  I started reading the cards for other people within days of getting my first deck.  That’s not because I’m somebody special; it’s because I found the best way to learn the cards is by doing them.

March looks like an action packed and somewhat stressful month for us all, folks.  You may already have chosen your tarot deck, and are enjoying it.  Even if you have, I am sure you’ll pick up many pointers here, so continue to read or listen.

    First, let’s talk about choosing your deck.  A traditional deck has 78 cards in it, so stick with that.  If you want to read with fewer cards, choose to read with just the minor arcana (56 cards) or the major arcana (22 cards). Together, they comprise the traditional 78 card deck.  You can also read with a regular playing card deck of 52 cards and apply the traditional tarot card meanings to them, minus the four Pages.  When you do that you are essentially reading the minor arcana - hearts are cups,  spades are swords, clubs are wands and  diamonds are pentacles.

     On March 24^th Pluto moves into Aquarius.  In astrology, Pluto represents many things.  Power, control, manipulation, transformation, and death are often associated with it; but perhaps the most important thing about it is that it represents the mass consciousness of the people. 

     Pluto has been in the sign Capricorn since January of 2008.  It’s very slow moving and will move back and forth between the signs Capricorn and Aquarius between March 24^th of 2023 and November 20^th of 2024, before finally remaining in Aquarius, where it will stay until March of 2043.

     My friends, please make yourself a journal of events, dreams, and desires that you experience in your life between when Pluto first moves into Aquarius on the 24^th, and June 2^nd , when it first retrogrades back towards Capricorn.

When I teach tarot, inevitably my students ask, what if I want to use the cards to read for myself? 

     As with all divination tools, using the tarot to answer questions or even do complete readings on yourself is a touchy subject.

     The reason for this is simple.  Most of the time when you want to know about something that’s going on in your life, it’s because it’s emotionally important to you.  And there’s the problem.  As soon as your emotions become involved you tend to interpret the cards in a way that either gives you what you want, or if you are really fearful, expands your fears. 

     The best time to do a reading on yourself therefore, is when you’ve got nothing important going on in your life, so you’re able to be objective, just as you would be when reading for another person.

     But of course, that’s not what you really want.  You want the cards to give you answers when you need them.  That means, your emotions are involved.

     I am writing this just after our new Speaker of the House was elected amidst much political maneuvering and 15 votes, here in the United States.  I don’t think the results of this election came as much of a surprise to most of us, and now we wait to see what comes next.  Will this bring about the changes everyone here in the US, indeed, all over the World, are wishing for?
